FAQs
1. What exactly is a VO2 max test?
A VO2 Max test measures your maximum oxygen uptake (VO2 max), which is the rate at which your body can utilize oxygen during intense exercise. It's the gold standard for measuring cardiovascular endurance and potential.
2. What preparation is needed?
A few things to keep in mind:
Avoid strenuous exercise 24-48 hours before the test.
Eat a light meal 2-3 hours beforehand but nothing between then.
Stay hydrated, but avoid excess fluids.
Wear comfortable athletic clothing and shoes.
3. What do the results mean?
Your VO2 max score will be compared to established norms based on your age, sex, and other factors. You'll also receive insights into your lactate threshold, heart rate zones, and potential areas for improvement.
Our certified VO2 technologist will breakdown your results, provide specific recommendations and/or refer you to the appropriate specialist.
4. Why should I get tested?
The results from a VO2 Max test are helpful in:
Understanding your current fitness level and setting realistic goals.
Monitoring progress and tracking training effectiveness.

5. Is VO2 Max testing safe for everyone?
It is always a safe precaution to consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, especially cardiac or respiratory issues. Pregnant women or individuals with recent injuries should also proceed with caution. However, this test is individualized and is built around your abilities, making it safe for the general public.
6. How can I improve my VO2 max?
Specific regimes may vary individudally based on results. However, regular aerobic exercise, interval training, and strength training are key. Focus on high-intensity workouts with sufficient recovery periods. Consistent effort is crucial for long-term progress.
7. What happens during the test?
We will begin measuring your Resting Metabolic Rate, getting a baseline measurement of your energy needs.
You'll perform an incremental exercise test (bike or treadmill) with increasing intensity.
Your oxygen consumption, heart rate, and other metrics will be monitored.
The test ends when you reach your maximal effort.
8. How much does it cost?
Prices at VO2 Max SF range from $120 to $499 depending on the package selected.
